What Is Zone 00? A Permaculture Approach to Inner Healing and Growth

One of the coolest things about permaculture is that it’s a holistic system—it works far beyond the garden. Sure, it can guide how we design our homesteads, our homes, even our communities.

But did you know you can also use it to grow as a person? That’s where Zone 00 comes in. Let’s talk about it.

I Don’t do Dogma

First, a little disclaimer: I’m chronically skeptical of advice that feels one-size-fits-all or remotely dogmatic.

Some of the circles I’m part of (natural parenting, real food, etc.) can lean that way at times.

But I’ve learned that as long as I keep my eyes, ears, and heart open to new information (especially when it challenges what I think I know), I usually find my way back to a balanced place.

That said, permaculture design by nature resists dogma. It’s grounded in the idea of designing for what actually works… for you and your site. And in the case of Zone 00, you are the site: your body, your mind, your energy.

Why Zone 00 Is Often Overlooked

The truth is, people often forget that Zone 00 even exists… or they don’t spend much time thinking about it. And honestly? I get it. Constantly turning inward before starting a project can feel exhausting or even annoying. Sometimes you just want to get to work and dig the garden beds!

But Zone 00 matters. Because permaculture isn’t just about efficiency or abundance. It’s about creating systems that are sustainable for you. And that begins with observation—not of the soil or the sun, but of your own patterns, energy, and needs.

What Is Permaculture Zone 00?

In permaculture, the zones are a way of organizing space based on how often you interact with it.

Zone 1 is the area closest to your home, where you grow your herbs, tend your daily-use vegetables, or keep your compost. From there, each zone moves outward until you reach Zone 5: the wild, unmanaged spaces that are mostly left alone.

So, if zone 1 is your garden, then zone 0 is your home.

But Zone 00? That’s you. Your inner landscape.

Tending Zone 00 means cultivating your inner self so you can move through the world in a more restorative, intentional, and non-destructive way.

Zone 00 design helps you build trust in your own instincts and intuition. It invites you to observe yourself: your strengths and weaknesses, your needs and patterns, your internal resources (all without judgment!), and then design a life that works with those things instead of fighting against them.

Why Zone 00 Design Matters

Here are some of the reasons Zone 00 design is worth your time, even when it feels easier to skip over:

You develop self-observation skills without jumping to judgment.

Anyone who’s been to therapy or spent time in deep self-reflection knows how much suffering comes from the stories we attach to our experiences.

Zone 00 design invites you to observe yourself with curiosity instead of blame. You can start to see what is (not what you think it “should” be) and respond with compassion and clarity.

You recognize patterns and work with them, not against them.

We all have patterns. Making ourselves wrong for them rarely helps. But when we understand them, we can work around them and even design for them.

As a parent, I learned early on to set my kids up for success. (Don’t leave a cupcake on the table and expect it to go untouched!) So why not extend that same kindness to myself?

You get clear on your needs and limits.

Here’s a simple but life-changing example: I need more than 8 hours of sleep. Always have. And science is just now catching up to the fact that most women do. Zone 00 design helped me not only recognize that, but also embrace it.

You create meaningful goals and visions.

When you’re clear on what you need, what you want, and how you function best, you can set goals that are based in truth, not external expectations. You’re not chasing someone else’s version of success. You’re cultivating your own.

You build a home base to return to when life gets wild.

Designing your inner landscape gives you an anchor… a steady place to come back to when everything else feels uncertain.

Isn’t that lovely?

How to Design Your Inner Landscape (Zone 00)

In her book People and Permaculture, Looby Macnamara offers a practical and powerful structure for designing your inner world. Here’s a brief overview of the approach, with a few personal reflections from my journey:

Start with Self-Awareness

Looby encourages deep reflection on your mental, emotional, and energetic states: your habits, beliefs, and values. It’s like assessing the soil before planting.

I’ve always been a reflective person, but over the last few years, I’ve learned to reflect in a more positive and loving way. I still notice my flaws, but I’ve also started honoring my strengths.

Cultivate Mindfulness and Presence

Mindful practices—like journaling, breathwork, or movement—help you stay grounded in your body and make intentional decisions.

In my early twenties, I got into minimalism and intentional living. It helped my anxiety so much. And mindful movement (walking, stretching, dancing) has become a regular part of my life.

Focus on Your Needs and Well-being

Design your life around what truly nurtures you, not just what’s expected.

Learning to prioritize my needs is still new for me. I’m a mom, so I can’t always put myself first. But I’ve realized that putting myself last isn’t okay either. I’m learning to meet my own needs with compassion.

Develop Emotional Resilience and Balance

Permaculture values resilience, and that applies to emotions, too. Instead of stuffing down your feelings, learn to work with them.

This one was big for me. I hadn’t realized how much I was holding in my body until I started releasing it. It was intense, I won’t lie. But it brought so much freedom. Feeling your feelings might feel like it’ll break you at first… but it won’t… and then you start healing.

Create Feedback Loops and Reflection Practices

Permaculture is cyclical, and your inner life can be too. Reflection allows you to adjust and realign.

Each night, I try to reflect on what’s coming up—whether it’s a quick journal entry, a quiet moment without a screen, or a talk with my sister. Small things stay small when you work through them regularly.

Nurture Your Relationship with Yourself

Zone 00 is where self-trust grows. The more compassion you cultivate inward, the more authentic your outward actions become.

Building self-trust has been huge for me. For so long, I didn’t trust my instincts. I gaslit myself constantly, second-guessing my gut, worrying I was “overreacting.” But I’ve learned that I’m allowed to listen to my feelings. If I turn out to be wrong? Who cares? It’s still okay to honor myself.

Use Tools That Support Growth

Whether it’s journaling, therapy, singing, or art, use tools that help you know yourself better.

Since getting divorced, I’ve leaned more into creativity. I sing at open mics, which has been surprisingly healing. I’ve also worked with a therapist, and I highly recommend it.

Be the Designer of Your Inner World

You’re not a passive bystander. You’re the gardener and the soil. You get to design your inner world just like you would a food forest—intentionally, regeneratively, and with love.

Isn’t that lovely! If you’re interested in learning more, I highly recommend Looby’s book.

Living Into Zone 00: My Personal Practice

I didn’t learn about Zone 00 as a formal concept until after I’d already been doing a lot of this work. But when I finally came across the term, it felt like the perfect container for what I was already practicing: healing, expanding, and creating a life I actually love.

Over the years, I’ve explored mindfulness, intentional living, and nervous system regulation. That work has helped me process trauma, soothe my body, and slowly become the version of myself I always knew I could be.

And here’s the thing: if you’ve ever explored manifestation or personal growth, you’ve probably heard this idea: your nervous system has to be ready for what you’re calling in.

Whether it’s more love, more abundance, more visibility… if your inner world is still stuck in survival mode, you’ll end up pushing away the very things you want most.

Zone 00 design has helped me prepare for more.

More joy. More trust. More love. More connection.

More rest. More resilience.

And that’s what I want for you, too.

Final Thoughts

Tending your inner landscape isn’t about fixing yourself…

(I’m so ready to not feel like I need to be fixed, anyone else?)

…It’s about knowing yourself, trusting your rhythms, and designing a life that grows with you.

This winter, I hope you’ll take time to sit with yourself. Light a candle. Wrap up in a blanket. Ask your body what it needs. And remember to listen.

Your inner world is worth tending to.
