As I began my adult life after college, during the economic collapse of 2008, I was thrown for a loop. All of the promises of the 90’s and my childhood were turned on their head.
No, a college degree wasn’t enough to guarantee me a job. Heck, a college degree, connections, a good work ethic, and drive to succeed were no longer enough. But the funny thing is, it all saved me.
I began to question why I was chasing this dream of the big career, car payment, mortgage, exhaustion, and dissatisfaction. Learning to live with very little out of necessity helped me to see that all I need is so much less than the world wants me to pursue.
I found that minimalism, simplicity, and self sufficiency were much more fulfilling. Once I wasn’t spending so much on stuff I thought I should want, I began to see the truth—that true happiness is individual, and that it never involves materialism.
