My journey towards a more natural life was gradual, as I would guess, most people’s are. I started replacing some of my commercial products with more natural ones, like homemade face wash, natural shampoo, and homemade deodorant.
I still used my same old makeup from the drug store, but since I wasn’t wearing makeup very much anymore (who has the time when they’ve got a baby on your hip?) it wasn’t a top priority. Then a wedding came up and I realized I needed something better.
I sifted through beauty products for hours trying to find the best natural makeup. I compared each of them to EWG’s Cosmetic safety database to see how “natural” each natural makeup was (hint: many of them aren’t). It was pretty depressing how “greenwashed” everything was. I ended up going without foundation and just used a mineral powder.
So when Jess of Pronounce Skincare contacted me about trying and reviewing her products I was thrilled (all opinions are my own). I didn’t even need to check EWG’s database because I recognized all of the ingredients in her products. This is already a huge yes for these products!
What is Pronounce Skincare?
Pronounce Skincare is a mama owned organic skincare line. Jess handcrafts each product from ingredients that are:
- Certified organic
- Raw
- Unrefined (i.e. not extracted by use of solvents, alcohol, or other chemical means)
- 100% pure
- Sustainably sourced
- GMO-free
Jess is a simple living enthusiast whose blog (Scratch Mommy) and skincare line (Pronounce Skincare) help readers live a simpler, more natural life. I love supporting small businesses, but especially when their mission is as close to my heart as Scratch Mommy’s is.
My Experience
When I started applying the facial foundation the first thing I noticed was the pleasant smell, which sort of threw me since I’d never experienced that before (usually I have to breathe through my mouth since conventional makeup smells so gross). Instead of hurrying through the application I was actually enjoying it. A small thing, but worth mentioning.
It also felt really nice on my skin, unlike any makeup I’ve ever used. The foundation was like adding a moisturizer and the powder felt very light.
But Does It Work?
I’m actually quite impressed. It’s the best organic makeup I’ve tried. I knew I would appreciate the safety of these products since I already knew what was in them. (Jess is totally transparent about what goes in her products. She even gives you the recipe on her blog if you’d rather make it yourself!)
What was impressive was how well it worked! Knowing that Pronounce Skincare facial foundation was made out of only natural ingredients I knew that it wouldn’t be the super thick shellack that some conventional foundations are. However, it still evened out my skin tone better than expected.
I added the facial powder on top and the combo created a really smooth and even coverage. I tried the powder alone when I was limited on time and it worked great to eliminate grease and even things out.
One thing I should mention is that I asked for the light shade, and Jess double checked with me that light was the correct color since it was for very pale skin.
I do consider myself to be very pale, however, the light was a little too light for me since I still have a bit of a tan from the summer. It should be perfect for the winter though.
Is It Expensive?
Because I know a lot of you are like me and want to get the best value for your money I investigated how much this makeup costs vs. comparable makeup. What I found is that Pronounce Skincare‘s foundation and powder (and I would guess other products too) are relatively inexpensive.
Bare Minerals makeup is 5 times the price of Pronounce Skincare and I’m not totally convinced Bare Minerals (or any mineral makeup) is safe while Pronounce Skincare‘s makeup is absolutely safe.
So safe that if my 3 yr old daughter wanted me to put some on her I would. In fact, if she licked the makeup I wouldn’t even flinch (except that, eww, then there are tongue germs on my awesome foundation!)
Update: This makeup lasts a long time. I don’t wear much makeup so I had it for a while and it was still good over a year after I got it!
Bottom Line: Best Natural Makeup
Great product. Inexpensive. Incredibly safe. What’s not to love about this organic makeup?
Some other products Jess of Pronounce Skincare offers include:

- Body Lotions

Hi Mindy! Thank you so much for linking up this post to the last Thriving on Thursdays linky party, even though it was way back on December 17. The party is starting up again tomorrow and I’m featuring this post. Would love for you to share what else you’ve been working on since.
